Who Has Low Vision?

An estimated 13.5 million Americans consider themselves to have moderate to severe visual impairment. Every person’s eyesight is unique to himself or herself. Two people with the same diagnosed eye condition will not, necessarily, derive the greatest benefit from the same aid. That is why testing is so essential and that is also why the person, him or herself, must be guided to be the judge of what is most helpful to them. Therefore our advice to anyone inquiring about low vision aids would be for the individual to take the opportunity to try out a range of magnifiers and other instruments by visiting our Vision Enhancement Center and to take professional advice.

Low Vision Aids

Low Vision aids may be as simple as a pocket magnifier or as complex as an electronic video magnifier. They may be used for near or distance vision tasks; or to increase general visual comfort. Some low vision aids include:

  • Magnifiers
  • Computer devices
  • Talking canes
  • Lamps
  • Kitchen Aides
  • Sunglasses
  • Specialty Trained Staff

Specialty trained, experienced staff works with you to evaluate your vision needs, review options, and makes recommendations. Following the selection of the best low vision aid(s), training will be provided to help you learn to effectively use, clean and store these new tools. Vision Enhancement Center provides clinical evaluation and device prescription; however, we do not provide medical services. All Vision Enhancement Center’s clients are required to have a recent (within one year) report from their eye care professional.
